Diarrhea describes loose, watery stools. It is very common and usually lasts a few days, although prolonged diarrhea can indicate a medical condition like irritable bowel syndrome. Stomach cramps and pain, bloating, fever, nausea, and vomiting often accompany diarrhea. It occurs when the stool moves too quickly through the colon so that the colon doesn’t have time to absorb enough liquid from it. The main culprits in causing diarrhea are viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Food intolerance and many medications can also cause diarrhea in susceptible people. If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, doctors may prescribe antibiotics if the cause is bacterial or parasitic.

Some pathogenic organisms known to cause diarrhea in humans (E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Proteus mirabilis) were exposed to raw garlic extract and the broad-spectrum antibiotic drugs ciprofloxacin and ampicillin. Garlic was superior to ampicillin in its effectiveness on all four types of bacteria and was similar to ciprofloxacin in its exceptional antimicrobial activity. Ampicillin has been prescribed indiscriminately for many years, and strains of bacteria are becoming resistant to it, decreasing its efficacy. This type of resistance is not known to occur in garlic.119 Garlic can be consumed in cases of diarrhea to destroy the infectious bacteria and resolve all symptoms.
